120-138 WALWORTH ROAD GAINS PLANNING PERMISSION - JULY 2010

Rolfe Judd Planning on behalf of Goldcrest Homes (Strategic Land) Ltd has successfully secured planning permission on Appeal for the provision of 232 student units and 734sqm of retail. The permission will ensure the delivery of 232 direct let student units to assist in meeting the very significant need in London for student homes.  

The appeal decision is a landmark case as it clearly stipulates that Councils must take into account of the need for student housing and that student housing forms an important component of housing provision in London. It identifies that need for student housing is London wide and that Councils should not seek to overly restrict new student housing to local institutions.  

The scheme designed by Rolfe Judd Architecture is designed to meet the Southwark's supplementary planning guidance for the site and to be sympathetic to neighbouring listed buildings. The scheme was welcomed by the Inspector who noted that:"...the careful attention to materials, massing, scale, rhythm and proportions would similarly prevent a dominating appearance and would provide a sensitive setting for those (listed) buildings."
