AJ Architecture Awards Shortlisting

We are delighted to announce that our One Victoria Street project has been shortlisted in the AJ Architecture Awards 2021 ‘Workplace’ category.

Rolfe Judd Architecture have worked closely with Legal & General to bring this redevelopment in Windsor town centre Conservation area through planning and construction stages to completion.

Formerly known as Thames Court, the existing tired 1970’s office building was no longer suitable for the 21st Century office market and has now been replaced by a fabulous new sustainable office space offering unique views towards the Grade 1 listed Castle. It has been designed in response to the surrounding historical context, whilst clearly being a modern addition.

Offering over 4,000 sqm of new flexible Grade A office space over five floors, the redevelopment has approximately doubled the lettable floor space on the site and is one of the first major office developments in the area for almost a decade.

The scheme evolved from detailed contextual analysis in order to respect and reference the varied traditional context. The use of traditional handset bricks with a mixture of light and dark tones and soldier course banding brings a domestic character to the base of the scheme responding to the surrounding plot heights and widths.

This solid base is topped by metal rainscreen clad facades that take a contemporary approach to the surrounding standing seam mansard roofscapes. A final ‘glass box’ storey sits lightly atop this, set far back to be hidden from street level. The wraparound roof terraces provide panoramic views of Windsor Castle and The Long Walk.

The ‘Be Lean, Be Clean, Be Green’ energy hierarchy was adopted in establishing the sustainability strategy for the development. Passive design measures were utilised to optimise the energy use of the building. The mechanical and electrical systems have all been selected to be highly efficient and PV panels have been incorporated on the roof. Planting has been provided in the form of Green Roofs, extensive terrace planters and street level landscaping to enhance the biodiversity of the site.

The completion of the One Victoria Street scheme brings new opportunities to this historic town whilst respecting its character and offering excellent wellbeing facilities to the future occupants.
