GLA Grants 100% Affordable Scheme
On Friday at a hearing at the GLA, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan resolved to grant planning permission for Rolfe Judd’s Osiers Road scheme in Wandsworth.
The scheme for London based developer Hollybrook provides 100% affordable housing and was recommended for approval by GLA officers. It had previously been supported by Wandsworth’s planning officers but overturned at Committee.
The scheme proposes three buildings of 10, 11 and 14 storeys comprising 168 homes and 3805sqm of commercial space. The employment space is focussed on SME business and maker industrial spaces which will provide jobs for local people. The scheme provides 1600sqm of public space, including accessible areas for children’s play which will be open to all residents and the public.
The design references the historic context of the site, once used to harvest Osiers for the basket weaving industry. The basket weaving concept was integrated into the design through a woven cladding which was developed and which creates an elegant series of facades with a positive contribution to the area and a high quality architectural finish.
Officers noted that:
“The proposal represents a high-quality redevelopment scheme which would make a significant contribution towards the continual regeneration of the Wandle Delta and…make a significant contribution to affordable housing delivery targets for the borough”…
“The design and layout principles are well-considered and the scheme achieves high quality placemaking, with well-defined new public routes, increased permeability and a large public space at the centre of the development, enhanced by high quality landscaping. The quality of design, architecture and materials will ensure a distinctive and high quality development which will contribute positively to the regeneration of this part of Wandsworth.”
The scheme was worked on jointly by Rolfe Judd Architecture and Rolfe Judd Planning.
Speaking after the scheme was granted approval, Rolfe Judd Architecture Director Euan MacGillivray said: “We are delighted the scheme has been granted planning, this is a great decision for Wandsworth, and will provide much-needed affordable housing in a high quality setting which will fully integrate to the riverside quarter.”
