H-03 – One Oval Gas Works

In Our Back Yard

A stone’s throw from the Rolfe Judd offices our Architecture and Planning teams are working for Berkeley Homes on the delivery of Oval Village – a residential led development with 100,000sqft offices at its heart, adjacent to The Kennington Oval. As part of this process Rolfe Judd were asked to re-imagine and re-design the façade of the centrepiece of the development set within the historic Grade II listed Gasholder No.1.

On the 17/07/20 the Rolfe Judd proposals for Gasholder No.1. were granted consent by Lambeth Council. We are excited by the prospect of realising this fantastic building and seeing it become a key landmark for the area.

The Grade II listed Gasholder No. 1 at the Kennington Gasholder Station, was built in 1877-9 by Corbet Woodall. The view of the gasholder from the cricket ground is synonymous with The Kennington Oval. It has been the backdrop to some memorable and legendary cricket matches over the many years. Whether this is on TV or imprinted into the mind of global cricket fans its association with the game and local community is long standing.

Throughout the design process there was engagement with our local community and we held early discussions with Heritage England. There was a strong emphasis on working with the retained listed structure and creating an iconic building that formed a striking but sensitive backdrop to the familiar silhouette of Gasholder No.1.

The form sits more comfortably within the guide structure and the flowing curve of the ‘halo’ responds to the simplicity of the original volume of the drum. The solid to glass rhythm accentuates the buildings cylindrical nature and the white brick facade is light and respectful to the silhouette of the frame.

Brickwork detailing creates verticality to reference the historic engineered telescopic mechanism that the structure is renowned for. Brickwork ribs spread out to across the new facades to accentuate the curve within a elevational bay.

Oval Village is just one of Rolfe Judd’s live schemes within our immediate community of Oval and Kennington. We are also working with Surrey County Cricket Club to create their new stand, (including extensive conferencing facilities), and Club Workspace to create new business communities at their Kennington Lane site.
