Planning Secured for Shakespeare Road
Rolfe Judd Architecture and Planning are excited to announce that we have secured a unanimous resolution from Lambeth Council’s Planning Committee to grant planning permission for a major redevelopment at Shakespeare Road within the Brixton and Herne Hill area.
Shakespeare Road is an isolated industrial site located in the Borough that provides an exciting opportunity for redevelopment. The proposals, on behalf of Urban & Provincial, will provide 218 high quality homes in buildings ranging from 5 to 11 storeys; 77% of the dwellings overall are dual aspect with a range of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments.
A new street frontage is created to Shakespeare Road, with the taller buildings towards the railway. The resulting site layout creates new central landscaped gardens with substantial play space for residents to enjoy; 35% of the homes will be affordable.
The architecture and materiality of the proposals is inspired by the rich history of the site and analysis of the existing context.
Recessive brick textured facades respond in colour to the surroundings with metal infill panels and roof setbacks referencing the railway and coal yard history.
Biodiverse green roofs, high urban green factor, enhanced building fabric performance, sustainable urban drainage, together with the Renewable Energy Strategy, contribute the sustainability of the proposals which will replace the current brownfield waste site.
The scheme also seeks the transfer of the capacity of the existing waste site to a donor site within the London Borough of Lambeth and is secured though a series of planning conditions and obligations for the site.
