New residential units, public realm and ground floor commercial facilities, alongside the Grand Union Canal and Shackles Dock in Hayes town centre.
The scheme will bring the area back to life with 122 apartments in two contrasting building styles. Improved landscape amenity will be provided along the Grand Union Canal towpath and Shackles Dock will become a hub for the town’s canoe club.
The site is an area with a rich industrial past, it was used for brickmaking throughout the 19th century. The proximity to the waterway enabled transportation of the bricks to London. A piano factory and storage units for various imported and exported goods were adjacent to the dock. By the end of the last century these industries had declined and eventually ceased trading.
The new buildings are designed to reflect the rich industrial heritage of the dockside and in their style and scale, are a modern reinterpretation of that historical architecture. The carefully crafted building forms and choice of materials are evocative of the factories and warehouses that once lined the canal. They feature thoughtful brickwork and metalwork detailing within their facades and roofscapes.
