Great Peter Street

This former lawyers’ office is located within the Smith Square Conservation Area, close to Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament. The period building was refurbished and extended, transforming it into nine contemporary living spaces.

Rolfe Judd was involved from pre-planning through to completion. The change of use from offices to high-end residential involved completely stripping out the interior finishes, stairs, lifts, services, some of the floors and the whole of the roof. The refurbishment introduced a new stair and lift, new interiors throughout, comfort cooling to all apartments, new roofs and new windows to the lightwells and rear façade. The front windows were retained including their leaded lights; secondary glazing was added to insulate for sound.

An additional storey was added to create a penthouse duplex unit with an extensive terrace enjoying views across to the Houses of Parliament.

The ground and basement storeys were converted to two duplex apartments, each with double height spaces. Additional area was created by infilling the lightwells at basement level and utilising rooflights. All the remaining floors incorporate two apartments per floor.
