We are thrilled to announce that three of our projects have been shortlisted for the Planning Awards 2024.
From reimagining complex city-centre schemes to fostering community spaces, each of these projects represents our commitment to creating vibrant, livable communities for generations to come.
The London Irish Centre is an important and well-used community hub in Camden, London. The project, designed by Coffey Architects, will make the London Irish Centre more efficient, accessible, and culturally inclusive while enhancing its role as an arts and cultural hub for Camden. Once completed the new, redeveloped Centre will be a state-of-the-art facility continuing to meet the needs of the local, Irish and wider London communities.
The project is a significant organisational and financial undertaking for the London Irish Centre, reflecting its aspirations to grow the Irish Heart of London and strengthen its long-term financial viability. The Planning Awards 2024 have honoured the calibre of this scheme by including it in the shortlist for the Award for best use of arts, culture or sport in placemaking category
Shortlisted in the category of Award for Infrastructure Planning is Broadwater Primary School, an approved new Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) School in the London Borough of Wandsworth. The development involves the retention and sensitive conversion of the existing Junior School building on site and the construction of a new purpose-built building for the proposed school students.
The new school, designed by Arcadis, will offer 3,500sqm of floorspace, and it will accommodate around 200 students and 160 staff members. The school also involves a new community café which will operate from the main entrance on Broadwater Road. The development will provide additional and much needed pupil places for those with moderate to severe learning difficulties through the re-purposing of a decommissioned primary school.
Recognised by its Excellence in Design, our last shortlisted project is the Berners & Wells redevelopment, designed by Emrys Architects for Maizeland Ltd and Arringford Ltd. This scheme demolished 58-60 Berners Street, a convoluted, dated brutalist building, and demolished behind a retained facade of 14-17 Wells Street; a locally listed building to create an excellent piece of architecture within Central London. The space can be used as either a single building or two separate buildings with over 7,000sqm of office space with the option for additional office or retail, professional services or restaurant uses at ground floor.
Berners Street has utilised high quality materials, colours and textures to create a façade which attracts attention yet supports its setting, while Wells Street has been redeveloped to be a high-quality commercial building, retaining its historic façade. Finally, Wells Mews benefits from a modern and quirky mosaic façade which has transformed the rear of the property and offers future potential for placemaking activities. This part retention approach supported the development exceeding the onsite carbon reduction targets.
we are very grateful for the recognition and the opportunity to showcase the impact of our work on a national stage. We couldn’t have achieved this without the support of our clients, project teams, and the communities we serve.
