Crowds back at the Oval

Surrey County Cricket Club’s ambitious plans to expand one of the world’s most famous and highly cherished sporting facilities have now been brought to life. The newly built One Oval Square, recently renamed the M.A.R. Galadari Stand, adds a new dimension to the grounds and facilities of the Kia Oval, providing a standalone conferencing and hospitality suite and an extra 2,500 spectator seats.

Rolfe Judd Planning have been advising the Club over many years on the continued enhancement of their stadium facilities. Following the completion of the Peter May Stand in 2016, this substantial new addition will enable the Kia Oval to further establish itself as one of the primary international cricket grounds as well as generating greater revenue for the club through the enhancement of its Conference and Events business.

The new design from Rolfe Judd Architecture includes an extension to the existing Peter May stand to increase its capacity and to expand the ground floor concourse area with a permanent Club shop and two new bars, ensuring a covered area capable of holding up to 8,000 people.

On the upper levels the offer includes two new double height pitch-facing restaurant/conference spaces with capacity for up to 1,500 seated guests, each equipped with commercial kitchen and bar areas and access to private external terraces.  The top spectator tier includes a spectacular new roof terrace with its own bar and food servery area offering 360-degree views of the London skyline and an unrivalled view of the pitch.

The proposals are carefully considered to resolve a number of very different issues and requirements. The design expression is a story of two sides, the outside relating to the local vernacular through classical proportions and materials with the pitch-facing inside much more in keeping with traditional sporting venues with two new tiers of seating which appear to float above the pre-existing Peter May Stand.

The new facilities includes a new wing to link to the locally listed Micky Stewart Member’s Pavilion building and bring balance to the pitch side elevation.

“As a company based in Oval it has been an honour and privilege for Rolfe Judd Planning to assist SCCC once again in their exciting plans to expand this historic ground and provide world class facilities in the heart of London.”
