Royal Wharf Pier wins NLA 2020 Moving Category Award
We are proud to announce that Royal Wharf Pier has been announced as the Winner of the New London Awards Moving Category at the New London Awards 2020. The Pier, which was designed by Nex Architecture is a new riverboat terminal on the Thames, located beside Ballymore and Oxley’s Royal Wharf development in London’s Royal Docks.
The pier is served by Thames Clipper for services into Central London and is designed on 4 key principles formed out of a Design Competition winning scheme by Nex Architecture and guide its success. The first design principle is that the fixed section of the pier is fully publicly accessible and broadly flat. This extends the public realm from the newly landscaped River Walk out into the Thames, providing new views and experiences to both residents and public alike. The second principle is that the architecture of the pier has been designed to highlight key views to the O2 Arena and Canary Wharf to the West, and the Thames Barrier to the East. The third design principle is that the canting brow and pontoon will be sheltered from the rain and the final principle is that the Pier provides access for all, accommodating users of varying age and ability.
We have been working with Oxley and Ballymore on the Royal Wharf development since construction began in 2013. Our strategic planning advice has supported the delivery of this significant development which alongside the pier includes 3,385 new homes, substantial new commercial floorspace, a new 2 form entry primary school and community centre. The last building on site was recently completed with the whole scheme being delivered in seven years.
