A residential-led, mixed-use scheme to transform an enclosed, industrial site will safeguard and increase the current employment provision, create 297 new homes and a public square.
The site has a single access point onto Clapham Common South Side and sits between the Notre Dame Estate and Lambeth College. It was once owned by the influential Thornton family and a listed Orangery survives within the Notre Dame Estate boundary. A linked proposal hopes to refurbish the Orangery and its surrounding public space.
Currently underused, with buildings that are no longer fit for purpose, the site is enclosed and separated from the community. The proposals open up the site creating accessible and welcoming spaces surrounded by striking contemporary architecture and beautifully landscaped gardens and walkways.
Six new architecturally stunning buildings, which vary in scale, form and materiality are designed to respond to the surrounding context, whilst maintaining a common contemporary language. The residential units have floor to ceiling glazing, large balconies or terraces and excellent daylight and outlook.
A series of landscaped gardens and walkways including a public square are proposed to activate the new pedestrianized street which runs the length of the site. An elegant and subtly curved glass office building marks the entrance to the site while a waste transfer facility which is to be re-provided on-site due to planning constraints, is hidden away at basement level. Flexible office space provides a range of opportunities for local businesses while a ground floor café provides activity to the pedestrianized street and public square.
