Rolfe Judd Planning are acting as planning consultants for the £65 million Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. It will bring together world class clinical care and research under one roof. The ambition is to become a national beacon of excellence that will help to transform lives, be the home of world leading research and halve the time it takes to develop new treatments to help children and young people with mental health issues.
The lower floors of the building will mainly be used for outpatient clinics and research purposes, allowing for close collaboration between clinicians and scientists from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, King’s College London and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience.
The upper floors of the new building will accommodate the Snowsfield inpatient ward alongside therapy space, an art room and other day and outdoor spaces. It will also be home to the outstanding Bethlem and Maudsley Hospital School, which provides highly personalised education for young people whilst they are inpatients, making sure that they can keep up their studies during this challenging time in their lives.
The building has been designed by IBI group as an open and welcoming environment, with an accessible feel so that the green public realm, designed by Growth Industry, continues seamlessly into the building.
