Portland Hospital Bridge Link

A prominent, new high level bridge link at third floor level is proposed to connect a satellite building on the Portland Hospital campus to the main building.

In order to improve the functionality and efficiency of the hospital, client HCA International commissioned a bridge link to perform two functions; span the distance between the buildings and protect those who use it from the elements. Due to the high visibility of the bridge, exceptional design was vital – a woven lattice concept was developed by architects William Matthew Associates and presented to Westminster City Council demonstrating a high aesthetic value as well as clear functional benefit.

A key part of the scheme’s delivery was that the new bridge link would have a negligible effect on the area’s surrounding amenity – Rolfe Judd worked closely with the design team and the Council to ensure that the proposal was of sufficient merit to justify overturning the usual presumption against development that spans public thoroughfares.
