A significant regeneration project by the Ballymore Group and Oxley Wharf Limited, Royal Wharf is an entirely new neighbourhood along the Thames riverfront in east London. Rolfe Judd alongside GHA delivered all 17 ha of the former brownfield site for the client, creating a community of homes for 10,000 people including many family townhouses, a school and community centre.
The importance of the scheme is recognised by the clients who saw Royal Wharf as one of the last opportunities to build a new town within London, introducing 3,385 residential units to a prime riverside location – delivered by a development programme of just six years. The development incorporates a high street, side streets, and the occasional mews, taking inspiration from the great estates that emerged in London, Rolfe Judd Planning is leading the planning and delivery of the project. This includes guiding the involvement of other selected practices that are working on building envelopes, liaising with GHA, and ensuring that the ambitious goals of the original masterplan are achieved.
Now complete the development provides 3,385 residential units, alongside new shops and restaurants, new business floor space, a new school, community and leisure facilities. The proposals also create a new riverside park and walkway and support a new Thames Clipper pier.
The scheme is seen as the catalyst for leading the regeneration of the Royal Docks, and will provide a significant amount of much needed housing in the area. We have worked in partnership with the London Borough of Newham throughout the planning phase of the project.
