This approved development in the London Borough of Merton will provide much needed new homes, retail and publicly accessible green space with a layout that prioritises pedestrians and cyclists.
The transformative regeneration of this redundant and under-utilised site in a strategic location, supports the future vision for Mitcham, contributing towards improving the wider public realm, as well as providing high-quality new homes and community spaces, all within a greatly designed and sustainable landscape setting.
When creating a design concept, we have considered the sites historic use as a gas works alongside the emerging context and allocation, which looks to ‘reimagine character’. Given the site’s strategic location, the design creates an opportunity to transform the redundant and under-utilised site into a new neighbourhood dedicated to the residents of Mitcham.
The comprehensive revitalization of the former gasworks site by transforming it into a vibrant and cohesive district will create pleasant places to live and visit, which will create 579 new homes, including 35% affordable apartments 79% dual aspect units across all tenures, commercial retail and community use spaces designed as a series of streets and permeable routes all based around a car-free landscaped centre. The variety of apartments on offer will ensure a rich and vibrant mix of residents.
The proposed development will support and serve the new and existing local community through the creation of new jobs and a variety of new public amenities providing local investment for Mitcham as well as public open space which naturally attracts people and effectively integrates the development into the existing community.
