We are delighted to announce that Wimbledon College of Arts has been shortlisted for the Best Heritage or Culture Project at the Building London Planning Awards 2023.

Wimbledon College of Arts is a constituent college of the UAL. It is a world-leading higher education provider, however the site was not reflecting this, with limited natural lighting and poor water proofing, thermal and acoustic performance.

This project took a retrofit first approach, deciding to modernise the existing buildings to meet the college’s current and future needs and adapt the facades to unify the various college buildings and their relationship to the surrounding conservation area. The investment into this campus both secures the long-term success of the college and contributes to the net-zero commitment by UAL.

The results of this redevelopment have improved the overall appearance and impression of the University and has enabled UAL to create an integrated performance environment and to facilitate more collaboration between design, acting, technical arts and performance courses and build a stronger student community.

The works have also enabled wider general public access to the space, reduced car parking provision, increased quantity and quality of soft landscaping and reduced localised surface water flooding.
