St Mary and Pope Kyrillos VI Coptic Orthodox Church comprised securing a two-storey building with a basement to secure additional local community, learning and religious education facilities.
The existing church comprises a large hall with a number of ad-hoc buildings around the site; a site which has adapted organically to its use over the passing of time. The project sort the replacement of a number of ancillary buildings and their replacement with a two-storey building with a basement measuring 468sqm. The space provides 6 flexible rooms, storage, kitchen, WC, and shower facilities. This is to relieve pressure on the main hall, improve the operations and services the church provides, and expand the church’s outreach programme including care for the homeless & free meal provision.
The main façade is of concrete construction enabling imprint finishes utilising Coptic Christian iconography. The development had to carefully consider the existing residential properties which surround the site to ensure neighbourliness from the operations, as well as careful management of car-parking arrangements given the intensity of the existing site, and intensification during particular times of the day.
