Barney Row

Barney has a dual discipline background in architecture and urban design, working in the UK and US on housing, masterplans, and infrastructure projects for private and public/non-profit clients.

His experience in the residential sector includes a pair of blue hexagonal towers in Stratford and a high-density suburban layout for 150 homes while at Alison Brooks Architects, as well as a modular affordable housing project on Chicago’s west side (C40 Cities, won while at Perkins+Will in 2019, completed 2025). Urban design projects include an infill strategy for Detroit’s Corktown neighbourhood, public plaza for the Wrigley Building, and campus planning for Florida State University, UIUC and the College of DuPage. Barney has also worked on stations for HS2 and Crossrail (the Elizabeth Line) while at Wilkinson Eyre Architects.

He is most preoccupied with placemaking, i.e. the role of well-designed gaps between buildings and active edges in fostering a sense of community, with spaces to meet formally and informally in natural settings that improve wellbeing.
