- LPA: London Borough of Tower Hamlets
Containerville commenced as a ‘Meanwhile Use’ as the redevelopment of the area was restricted by the Hazardous Substances Consent retained at the neighbouring Marian Place Gasholders. With this unique designation, Rolfe Judd has had to liaise closely with Tower Hamlets and the Health and Safety Executive throughout.
As it’s namesake, the development is comprised of reconditioned shipping containers, each measuring 25.5sqm. The spaces have been ideal for start-up businesses of between 1-6 persons, offering affordable accommodation (passed on by the low construction and upkeep cost), close to the City where rents have squeezed the creative industries. The development has hosted a wide range of businesses, from gin distillers, to hairdressers, to brownie makers to soundboard artists.
From securing the original consent of 24 containers, it has now grown to over 200 spread over two main sites. We have also acted for larger ‘next level’ accommodation on other nearby sites for businesses now looking to grow. Rolfe Judd has recently secured permanent consent for part of Containerville, a recognition of the substantial contribution the scheme has made to the local economy. Containerville was also shortlisted for the EG Best Workspace Award.
